Lakes shut out by LF

Lakes' girls soccer team is simply seeking improvement.

The Eagles won their first game of the season Friday, as they got past Mother McAuley, and were trying to make it two straight Saturday against the host school in the Lake Forest Snowball Classic in Lake Forest.

Lakes was competitive, but dropped a 2-0 decision to the undefeated Scouts in semifinal action.

Lake Forest (5-0, 2-0) will next play the winner of Tuesday's scheduled game between Stevenson and Carmel.

Lakes (1-6, 1-1) is a young team still trying to hit its stride.

"In some ways we're doing OK and getting better with each game," Eagles coach Kevin Kullby said. "There's a semblance of connecting passes around the field. We're getting players in the right spots."

Lake Forest keeper Finley Amato made a couple of key saves and earned the shutout.

"We had a couple of chances," Kullby said. "It would've been nice to do something with them. I thought we did pretty well. (Lake Forest) got two goals and they could've had more."

Haleigh McPeek and Kate Affourtit scored for the Scouts. McPeek scored in the seventh minute off an assist from Affourtit, and Affourtit finished a McPeek pass in the 53rd minute.

"We just make the runs," said McPeek, a freshman who has scored 5 goals and an assist in five games. "On my goal, my sister Hollis sent it and Kate touched it over to me. I shot it and found the goal."

Eagles freshman keeper Sarah Fitzpatrick made 8 stops and had good defensive support from Alyssa Baker, Sarah Bartlett, Jenny Mason and Kristina Umlauf.

"We really didn't have a great game," Lake Forest coach Ty Stuckslager said. "Lakes played very well and moved the ball around well.

"Both of our goals were great goals. But we squandered other opportunities. Give them credit for packing the box and blocking shots. I thought their goalkeeper made some good saves."

Libertyville 4, Marist 1: In a Pepsi Showdown game at Oak Park River Forest, twins Haley and Hannah Walton and Michele McCracken each had a goal and an assist for the Wildcats.

Felicia Gonzalez also scored for Libertyville (5-1-1), which will host Lake Forest at 4:30 p.m. Monday at LHS Stadium.
