Wang improves to 3-0 as Yankees top Red Sox
Chien-Ming Wang gave up only a home run by J.D. Drew that was nearly caught and a bunt single Friday night as the New York Yankees beat the host Boston Red Sox 4-1.
Wang (3-0) allowed only one other runner, on an error. In his previous start, he went 6 innings in the Yankees' 2-0 win over Tampa Bay.
A struggling Jason Giambi gave New York a 2-1 lead with a leadoff homer in the seventh inning off Mike Timlin (0-1). Jose Molina then doubled, took third on Alberto Gonzalez's sacrifice, and scored on Melky Cabrera's sacrifice fly.
Bobby Abreu singled in the final run in the ninth.
The first two batters in the fifth flied out to Bobby Abreu in deep right. Drew followed with another high fly and Abreu kept drifting back. He reached back with his right hand for the low wall in front of Boston's dugout, touched the top, then bumped into it with his body. He jumped, and the ball appeared to graze his glove before landing in the Boston bullpen.
Athletics 9, Indians 7: C.C. Sabathia (0-2) was pounded for 9 runs and 12 hits in his shortest outing in nearly two years, and Oakland held on to win at Cleveland. Joe Blanton (1-2) allowed 8 hits and 5 runs over 7¿ innings to win for the first time in 6 starts since last Sept. 15.
Rays 10, Orioles 5: Carlos Pena homered twice and drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to finish with 6 RBI as Tampa Bay beat visiting Baltimore.
Twins 5, Royals 0: Livan Hernandez scattered 7 hits over 7 innings to win his third straight start as Minnesota won at Kansas City. Hernandez is off to his best start since 2002 with San Francisco.
Blue Jays 8, Rangers 5: Lyle Overbay hit a 3-run double, Vernon Wells drove in 2 runs, and visiting Toronto ended a three-game losing streak. Jesse Litsch (2-0) allowed 2 runs and 6 hits over 5¿ innings.
National League
Mets 4, Brewers 2: Nelson Figueroa earned his first major-league win in five years, and host New York got a good effort from its bullpen to win its third straight. Milwaukee starter Manny Parra (1-1), who pitched a perfect game for Triple-A Nashville last June, allowed 3 runs and 6 hits in 4 innings.
Braves 3, Nationals 0: Atlanta's Tim Hudson (2-0) scattered 3 hits over 8 innings to improve to 6-1 all time against the host Nationals, outpitching Washington starter Matt Chico.
Pirates 1, Reds 0: Jason Bay hit a home run in the sixth inning that gave Pittsburgh a rain-soaked win over visiting Cincinnati. Paul Maholm, John Grabow (1-0), Damaso Marte and Matt Capps combined on a 7-hit shutout.
Marlins 10, Astros 6: Jeremy Hermida hit 2 of Florida's team-record 6 home runs, and the visiting Marlins roughed up Roy Oswalt (0-3) for their fourth straight victory.
