'Awesome' monument, disturbing ceremony
For many among the hundreds who braved a rain-snow mix and some wicked winds, there were a couple of questions to be answered about the unveiling of the "Championship Moments" monument at Gate 4 outside U.S. Cellular Field on Friday. The ceremony honored the 2005 World Series champion White Sox.
First, why did the organization opt to use a sound system almost as sophisticated as a Mr. Microphone set (static included!)?
And second, why in the world was Gov. Rod Blagojevich -- an admitted Cubs fan -- doing so much talking?
What was supposed to be a joyous occasion featuring a stunning bronze and granite salute to the 2005 champs instead turned into a boo-fest the minute the governor was introduced.
Boo.
"I'd love to thank you for the wonderful, warm welcome."
Boo.
"My side of town would like to replicate what you did (in 2005)."
Boo.
"Sure am glad this isn't an election year."
Boo.
The governor and the agitated crowd were saved seconds later by the arrival of White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and some of the players from the '05 team. They rushed out from Gate 4 to thunderous applause, taking a quick look at the work of artist Julie Rotblatt-Amrany of the Fine Art Studio of Rotblatt-Amrany in Highwood.
"Awesome … outstanding," Guillen said of the project that took two years to complete.
Finally, something to cheer about.
