Daniel Day-Lewis won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his great performance as a poor miner, who at the start of the 1900s, becomes a wealthy oil businessman. We see him over 30 years and what power has done to him. He is a mass of contradictions, and the visuals help tell the story.
"Lions For Lambs"
There are three storylines tied together. Two soldiers who are injured, are in a fight in Afghanistan. Senator Irving (Tom Cruise) is the architect of the strategy that has the men in harms way. He uses journalist Janine Roth (Meryl Streep) to sell his plan, and professor Malley (Robert Redford), who had the soldiers as students, argues with his latest gifted student. The film makes a point about now the mass media sells the public on what the establishment wants it to know is the truth.
"Reservation Road"
Ethan Learner (Joaquin Phoenix) is out with his family when Dwight Arno (Mark Ruffalo) racing back home from a baseball game, swerves and kills Learner's son. He does not stop, and the film follows the two dads, as Dwight is haunted by what happened and is filled with guilt, and Ethan the family man, plots his revenge. It is a drama that turns into a thriller, and the supporting roles add strength to the story.
