District 158 getting leadership it needs

Notice how little negativity appears in the local paper these days regarding Huntley School District 158? I like to think that is due to the leadership of Superintendent John Burkey.

In less than two years, parents have seen the inauguration of the Freshman Academy, another five AP courses added to the curriculum, school climate focused on education and student achievement, more transparency in teacher negotiations and, of course, the addition of Chinese to the middle and high school curriculum. In fact, approximately 125 students will be enrolled this fall.

Burkey also extends himself into the community via the Chamber of Commerce. He has participated in speaking engagements at Del Webb ranging from assassination conspiracies of JFK to the educational system in the Japanese school system, something he experienced first hand.

He has lent his talent to at least four variety shows in the district. He sets himself above the political frays of his position, challenging staff, board members and the community with discussions of the book, "Failure is Not an Option." His leadership is refreshing.

Step by step, Burkey is raising the academic bar for both the teachers and students in District 158. Let's hope he leads our school district for many years to come.
