St. Charles OKs assisted living, Costco plans

St. Charles aldermen this week approved plans for an 80-unit assisted living facility as well as a Costco wholesale store on the city's west side.

The three-story Sunrise Senior Living facility will sit on 3.4 acres on the northwest corner of Route 64 and Peck Road, just east of a neighborhood park and west of Walgreens.

City planner Russell Colby said he expects the company to seek building permits in the next couple of months. "I know they want to complete it this construction season."

In other development business, the council signed off on preliminary plans for a Costco store slated for 15 acres on the southwest corner of Route 64 and Randall Road, near Oak Street.

A Costco representative has said the 154,000-square-foot retail outlet could open "by the end of the year" if the project goes as scheduled.

Both projects previously gained support from the city plan commission before going to the city council Monday for a final vote. Council members approved them unanimously.

Costco is a membership-only discount department store similar to Sam's Club and based in Washington state. According to the wholesaler's Web site, there are 12 stores within 50 miles of Chicago; the closest store to St. Charles is about 14 miles away in Bloomingdale.
