Group to give food to needy for Passover
For 100 years, Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago has packed and delivered food for the needy on Passover and Rosh Hashanah.
The group will pack and deliver 5,000 boxes from 6 to 11 a.m. Sunday to prepare for the beginning of Passover at sundown. Those boxes will go to 12,000 needy Jews throughout the area.
"We collect money to buy the food all year round," said Audrey Schiff, executive director of the Lincolnwood-based group. "Twice a year we buy the food to distribute."
About 1,500 volunteers come out twice yearly for the distribution. This year, the packaging will be at a Morton Grove warehouse. The warehouse space is also donated whenever the group needs it, Schiff said.
The packages include kosher chicken, matzoh, gefilte fish, Shabbat and Yahrzeit candles, tea, soup base, horseradish, wine, jelly, eggs, carrots, celery, onion and a Passover holiday guide.
"We're always actively seeking food donors," she said.
