Too much stuff at home? Sherman can sell it for you
Still have some leftover stuff from Elgin's spring cleaning week?
Didn't have enough time to clean out your attic or garage?
Or, do you want to fill that open space with some new items while helping a good cause?
The "Upscale Garage Sale" on April 19 to help Sherman Hospital could be the answer to all three above questions.
The second annual sale will help the hospital's Women's Auxiliary raise money toward the new birthing center at the new Sherman, which is under construction at Randall and Big Timber roads in Elgin.
The auxiliary has pledged $1 million and hopes to hit that mark within two or three years.
Nearly 3,000 babies were born at Sherman last year. A new center will include a neonatal care unit.
"We raised close to $5,000 last year," said Michelle Howe, Sherman marketing specialist. "The items donated are tax-deductible."
Residents have the chance to drop off household items several days next week.
Organizers are still accepting antiques, clothes on hangers, furniture, tools, toys and books, Howe said. Electronics, however, will not be accepted.
The sale is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 19 at the former D.C. Cook Publishing Co. building, 850 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.
People who want to donate items can drop them off between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and 3 to 6 p.m. April 14-17 at the Cook building.
A special drop-off day for baked goods for the bake sale is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 18 at the Sherman Volunteer office, 931 Center St., Elgin.
In addition to the items collected by the Sherman Auxiliary, the Sherman Men's Health Alliance will sponsor the sale of lawn equipment from Elgin-based Ralph Helm Inc. and art from Warren Mogler, a local artist.
Admission to the sale is $5 per person from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and $1 per person from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Strollers will not be admitted to the building.
