Man gets five years for drugs, run-in with Naperville cops

A Naperville man involved in a police scuffle, in which he was subdued with a Taser, was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison for several infractions.

Armando R. Torres, 22, 1521 Auburn Ave., was convicted of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, aggravated fleeing and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Torres was arrested Aug. 31 after police stopped his black 2004 Lincoln LS at a gas station at Redstart Road and Washington Street in Naperville. Torres fled but returned to his car with the officer still in pursuit. During an ensuing struggle, authorities said, Torres threw the officer to the ground and drove away, hitting a parked car.

Another police officer arriving at the gas station tried to stop him. Police said Torres headed east on Bailey Road, speeding and ignoring traffic lights and stop signs. He drove off the road near Clemson Court, hit a tree and stopped.

Police said they struggled with Torres again before using a Taser to subdue him. He was then taken into custody. Both Torres and a Naperville police officer were treated at the hospital for minor injuries.

DuPage Circuit Judge Michael Burke sentenced Torres for the encounter, as well as for an unrelated felony drug case.
