Despite uncertain start, one last trip downstate was in the cards

Do you believe in destiny, fate? That what you do, act, devote yourself to, will affect your well being in the future? Karma.

This season began with uncertainties: doubts, fears, questions. Would Naperville Central be of old? Would the Redhawks win? How will their chemistry be?

There were many concerns that surfaced, none of which were ours. We left all the reservations and worries to others. Instead, we concentrated on the present, rather than the future. Because the only thing you can change is now.

The present is sometimes lost in the mix, between glancing back at the past and gazing forward toward the future. Day to day in practice, we played out scenarios of games, defenses teams would throw at us, and took pride in every possession. We pushed each other to not settle, never surrender to the opponent. Forbidding ourselves from dwelling on the past season, and refusing to look toward our bright futures, we obtained pure focus on the present.

We worked hard, persevered, and believed even when our backs were against the wall. Everything that we did in the past determined our future. That's what karma is. Destiny. We conquered adversity, and it revealed our character.

Returning to Bloomington for a second trip downstate, I am happy but not satisfied. The Redhawks, along with seven other teams, are not just making the trip for enjoyment; we are making the trip to win. We are making the trip to acquire hardware.

At the conclusion of last season, I immediately desired to repeat. Everyone dreams of winning a state championship, but after winning one, I realize it's not enough. The indescribable feeling I encountered after clinching the title is priceless.

I have mixed emotions regarding the conclusion of my career as a Redhawk. I know that all good things must come to an end for others to begin. The realization that this is the last weekend I will wear a Redhawk uniform has not set in. My four years have flown by, the only thing that was left behind were memories.

Wish us luck! We will face Peoria Richwood at 6:30 p.m. Friday. I cannot believe it! WE ARE DOWNSTATE BABY! Elite Eight!
