Cook County votes to demolish historic slides
Toboggan slides operated by the Cook County Forest Preserve that have been used by Chicago area residents since the 1930s will be torn down, with the land under them regraded for sledding.
The Forest Preserve Commission approved contracts Tuesday to demolish the storied, southwest suburban Swallow Cliff slides and a set of similar slides at Caldwell Woods on Chicago's Far Northwest Side.
The vote came after Palos Park Mayor John Mahoney argued on behalf of Swallow Cliff, saying he was holding out hope the slides would one day be rebuilt as part of a larger recreational facility.
Mahoney added the six parallel toboggan runs at Swallow Cliff in Palos Township, known to many fans as Terror Hill, are yesterday's Great America.
The Swallow Cliff slides, which would have cost $1.2 million to restore, were last open in 2004.
