Burrell, Phillies rough up Arroyo

Hello, New York. The team that brought you all that torment last season is coming back to town.

Remember? The Philadelphia Phillies do, too.

Pat Burrell hit 2 of the Phillies' 4 homers off Bronson Arroyo on Monday in Cincinnati, setting up a 5-3 victory over the Reds that provided a little momentum and a split of their four-game series.

Then, the defending NL East champions headed for New York to face the Mets, the team they toppled in a stunning September.

"I enjoy going to New York and playing," said Burrell, who has been Philadelphia's hottest hitter. "There's always a little extra excitement there. Especially with what happened last year, I'm sure they're gunning for us. And that's the way it should be."

The Phillies are finding their stride just in time.

Jimmy Rollins and Geoff Jenkins also homered off Arroyo (0-1), who had never before given up more than 3 in a game. The Phillies had the league's most prolific offense last year but were widely inconsistent in the season's opening week.

"We're starting to swing the bats like we're capable, and that takes a lot of pressure off our pitchers," said Burrell, batting .435 with 3 homers and a team-high 9 RBI. "Hopefully we can continue to do this."

Astros 5, Cardinals 3: Miguel Tejada's 2-run homer in the bottom of the ninth gave host Houston a win over St. Louis, snapping a five game winning streak for the Cardinals. Tejada's home run to right field off Kyle McClellan (0-1) scored pinch runner Darin Erstad.

Padres 8, Giants 4: Greg Maddux earned his 348th career win, Adrian Gonzalez went 4-for-5 with a homer and 4 runs, and San Diego spoiled San Francisco's home opener. Maddux (1-0) gave up 1 run and 3 hits in 7 innings and has won 6 straight decisions against San Francisco since 2003. He retired 19 of his final 20 batters.

Rockies 2, Braves 1: Matt Holliday hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, Aaron Cook pitched 7 strong innings, and host Colorado snapped a five-game losing streak with a win over Atlanta. Tom Glavine gave up 3 hits in 6½ shutout innings but got his second straight no-decision, despite owning a 0.79 ERA in 2 starts.

Marlins 10, Nationals 7: Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla and Robert Andino homered, four relievers combined for 5¿ innings of 1-run ball, and Florida beat host Washington to stay atop the NL East. The Nationals, meanwhile, dropped their fifth consecutive game after a 3-0 start.

Yankees 6, Rays 1: Mike Mussina tied Bob Gibson on the career wins list by pitching 6 sharp innings, Bobby Abreu hit a 2-run homer, and host New York beat Tampa Bay. Abreu went 3-for-3 with a walk, and Hideki Matsui drove in 2 runs for the Yankees, who lost shortstop Derek Jeter after two innings. Jeter left the game with a strained left quadriceps.

Orioles 5, Mariners 4: At Baltimore, Aubrey Huff homered to break an eighth-inning tie, and the surprising Orioles completed their first four-game sweep of Seattle since 1999. Melvin Mora also homered, and Brian Roberts had 3 hits for the Orioles, an AL-best 5-1.
