Eight-year-old killed when struck by SUV

An 8-year-old boy is dead after being struck by a sport utility vehicle.

The accident occurred last night in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood.

Police say the boy was running across a street after retrieving a jacket when he was struck by a northbound Jeep Cherokee. Police Sergeant Antonio Baio says the boy, whose name wasn't revealed, was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.

The driver of the Jeep, a 28-year-old woman, was in police custody this morning. No charges have been filed and no citations have been issued.

Baio says investigators were trying to determine if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the accident.
