It took a long time on a hot day for Serena Williams to claim her fifth title at Key Biscayne,Fla. She blew a big lead, battled jitters, threw a tantrum and finally finished off Jelena Jankovic 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 to win the Sony Ericsson Open.
The elusive victory tested Williams' temper in the 85-degree sunshine. She broke her racket and screamed at herself before putting away an overhead slam on her eighth championship point.
Tale of Ekati edges War Pass
Tale of Ekati caught a tiring War Pass in the final strides for a half-length victory in the $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on Saturday.
The loss was the second straight for the one-time Derby favorite, but it may still be good enough to earn the 2-year-old champion a trip to Churchill Downs on May 3.
Tale of Ekati, though, is on his way after a thrilling stretch run under Edgar Prado, and he gives trainer Barclay Tagg a leading Derby contender.
"We're ready to go on to Kentucky," said Tagg, who won the 2003 Derby with Funny Cide. "He's a gem, that's for sure."
Cal introduces Montgomery
Mike Montgomery made his way across the Bay on Saturday, taking over the California men's basketball program with promises to take the Golden Bears to the same heights he reached at Stanford. After 18 years in Cardinal red, the coach agreed to a six-year contract and was introduced at a news conference at Berkeley, nearly four years after he left Stanford for a dismal stint with the Golden State Warriors.
Wolves skate past Rivermen: Forwards Jesse Schultz and Brett Sterling each scored a pair of goals for the Chicago Wolves as they downed the host Peoria Rivermen 6-4 at Carver Arena on Saturday night. Right wing Joe Motzko had a goal and two assists, and center Jason Krog and defenseman Brian Fahey each added a pair of assists.
The Wolves (50-20-2-3) reached the 50-win mark for just the third time in the club's 14-year history.
Cougars win pair at Beloit
The Kane County Cougars used Travis Banwart's 7-inning complete game in Game 1 and a 5-run fifth-inning in Game 2 to propel them to a doubleheader sweep against the host Beloit Snappers on Saturday.
The Cougars, who won, 3-1 and 6-3, can sweep the season-opening four-game series today.
The Cougars never trailed in Game 1, thanks to Todd Johnson's RBI single in the second, which brought home another run after a Beloit error. Travis Banwart gave up 1 run on 5 hits, walked one and struck out four in his first professional complete game.
Storm heads into playoffs
The visiting Chicago Storm suffered its first loss to the expansion Orlando Sharks 13-9 in Saturday its in Major Indoor Soccer League regular-season finale, but the Storm had already secured the No. 5 seed in the MISL playoffs. The Storm (15-15) will open its two-match quarterfinal series against No. 4 seed La Raza de Monterrey at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates.
Busch posts Texas victory. After all the laps Kyle Busch has led in the NASCAR Nationwide Series this season, he finally led the only one that ever really matters.
Busch won at Texas Motor Speedway in dominating fashion Saturday, leading 126 of the 200 laps and finishing more than a second ahead of Jeff Burton. With an average speed of 151.708 mph, it was fastest Nationwide race at the 1½-mile, high-banked track.
