Learn more about homeless animals
Thank you for the series highlighting the burgeoning problem of unwanted pets and the dedicated people who try to save as many as possible.
Readers who want to learn more should check out www.AdoptingaDog.org.
It features an extensive list of Chicagoland shelters and rescue groups, information on puppy mills and why you should never buy from a pet store, legislative issues, newspaper and magazine articles, books, service groups, what to expect from your newly adopted dog and many other resources.
Owning a dog or cat is a lifetime commitment to make the animal part of your family -- beyond the cute puppy or kitten stage.
That means giving your pet love and attention, daily exercise, proper training, regular grooming, medical care, a collar with name tag, and watching out for his safety. All that takes time, effort, and money -- continually.
If you're short on any one of these, don't get a dog or cat. The world doesn't need any more lawn ornaments or neglected, unhappy animals. Everyone in your household must be fully aware of and in agreement to the responsibility and commitment it takes by all to own a pet. Your momentary impulse very likely could cost that pet his life.
