Spring cleanup set in St. Charles
Weather aside, at least spring cleanup and brush pickup programs are arriving on time this month in the city of St. Charles.
Spring cleanup items will be gathered April 26 on the east side of the Fox River and May 3 on the west side, while brush pickup in those areas is Monday and April 14, respectively.
Branches 3-feet long and less than one foot in diameter are eligible for pickup. Brush must be placed on the parkway, with cut ends facing the street before 7 a.m. on pickup dates. The debris should not be piled higher than 4 feet or bundled with rope or wire.
Stumps and trunks should be no larger than one foot in diameter and length. Yard waste such as twigs, trimmings and leaves should be placed in a brown paper bag bearing the city logo and put out with regular garbage. Generic bags also are acceptable as long as they have an orange waste sticker.
Spring cleanup materials should be put out by 7 a.m. on pickup dates as well. Containers not for disposal should be marked "Do not throw can away."
Spring cleanup items should also be kept separate from regular garbage and cannot include hazardous waste, yard waste, tires, appliances or construction waste, officials said.
Residents can dispose of hazardous waste such as chemicals, pesticides and paint from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at the Naperville Fire Station, Route 59 and Brookdale Road, or from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17 at the Kane County Fairgrounds at Randall Road and Route 38 in St. Charles. Ammunition, fireworks, medical waste and latex paint will not be accepted.
To dispose of tires, call the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency at (217) 785-8604. To dispose of construction materials such as doors, windows, drywall and lumber, call (630) 377-4405.
Mulch resulting from annual brush pickup is available from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and from 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays, at St. Charles' wastewater treatment plant along Route 38, west of Peck Road. Interested residents should call (630) 377-4405 to confirm a pickup date.
