More cops on street patrol

Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis says more than 200 additional officers will be on the city's streets by the end of the year. Weis says 50 officers who were on desk duty are already on patrol because they were replaced by civilians. He says an additional 86 officers assigned to desk duty will hit the streets after civilians fill their posts by June 1. Officials says this year's budget provides for the hiring of 75 new officers, a slight boost in the ranks of the 13,400 sworn officers on the city payroll as of December. Weis says the city also anticipates hiring about 350 officers to replace those it expects to lose to attrition.
