Second pipe bomb detonated at Elgin's Wing Park
For the second time in 17 days, an Elgin city worker found a detonated pipe bomb near the Wing Park Bandshell.
The first exploded pipe bomb -- a 5-inch length of pipe wrapped in duct tape --was found in the same area by a city employee doing cleanup work in the park on March 17.
It did minor damage smoke and fire damage to a wall of the bandshell from the bomb, and no injuries were reported. In that case, Elgin police received a call two days earlier at 8:27 p.m. from someone who reported hearing a loud explosion coming from the area of Wing Park.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was brought in to assist Elgin detectives in their investigation in the first case.
Police said another city employee located the latest pipe bomb shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday.
This bomb also had been detonated, police said
Police said they recovered one piece of it and would compare it to the evidence recovered from the first bomb.
"There are no suspects now," police spokeswoman Ann Dinges said. "There was no damage and it is undetermined when the bomb was detonated."
