Fire damages Elgin home

Elgin firefighters were called at 11:36 a.m. Thursday to a fire at a historic home on the 400 block of North Gifford Street.

Personnel on the first engine to arrive said flames were shooting from a second-floor bedroom on the west side of the house.

The window was broken for ventilation, but the fire spread to the attic above a bedroom.

Elgin Fire Department Battalion Chief Greg Benson said it took about 15 minutes to extinguish the fire that was confined to the bedroom and attic.

No one was reported injured in the fire, and no estimate was available Thursday evening of the damage.

Benson said three fire engines, a ladder truck, an ambulance and two command vehicles, all from Elgin, responded to the scene.

City inspectors red-tagged the home as uninhabitable.

Elgin fire inspectors were at the scene Thursday afternoon trying to determine the cause of the fire.
