Hoop games
The sun is shining longer, the snow is melting and the days are getting warmer. Yes, it's finally spring in Chicago and the fever for outdoor sports is rising.
The NCAA tournament is down to a handful of best teams and it's basketball season boys and girls!
So, for all of you who need an outlet for that nervous, pent-up energy resulting from the $300 that you dropped into the office pool --pay attention!
When included as part of a regular physical routine, basketball can benefit the heart, lungs and your circulation.
All you need to do to soak up the health benefits is bounce the ball around (while moving that is) for at least 30 minutes a few days a week at 50 percent to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate, the American Heart Association says.
This is classified as moderate-to-vigorous aerobic activity. You can also accumulate your 30 minutes in 10- or 15-minute sessions.
Playing a game of basketball for a mere 15 to 20 minutes at the moderate-to-vigorous level, or just kicking back and shooting some hoops for 30 minutes, is what will best yield these healthful results.
Regardless of which medical authority you follow, it's important to include physical activity as part of a regular routine. If you've got a love of the game, then what better way to do it than shooting a few hoops?
Living in the suburbs, that "down the street game at the local court" probably is not available to you since there isn't a plethora of outdoor public basketball courts. But what we do have are well-organized park districts and a variety of private league options to fit any rank of game you're seeking.
No park district games in your neck of the woods? Want to meet new people and just play the game? Already have your team together but want to bring it up a notch and throw in a real competitive edge? Navigate your way on over to sportsmonster.net.
Sports Monster basketball has grown to become one of the largest leagues in the Chicago area. Their paid referees mediate nine weeks of action for men's, women's and co-ed leagues.
If you're looking to just get out on the court and shoot a few, Sports Monster's intermediate level is perfect for you.
Players boasting a few high school or college games under their belt will enjoy the competitive level.
You can join a Sports Monster League as a single, group of four or an entire team.
Living in the suburbs is no excuse for not playing hoops. So if you fancy yourself a pro, think you've got game or just dig hanging with your buddies -- just make sure you put down the remote and get out of your recliner this basketball season! There is a game not far from your home just waiting for your three pointers.
Plus, your body will thank you.
