Chicago officer is indicted for beating handcuffed man in wheelchair
A Chicago police officer whose beating of a handcuffed man in a wheelchair was captured on videotape has been indicted on a federal charge.
Prosecutors announced Thursday that a grand jury has returned an indictment against William Cozzi.
The 50-year-old is charged with one count of violating the victim's civil right to be free from the use of unreasonable force by a person acting under color of law.
Cozzi pleaded guilty last year to misdemeanor battery in the 2005 incident that took place in a hospital emergency room. He has been suspended and is still on the force, though the department has recommended he be fired. He joined the police department in 1992.
A message left for his attorney Thursday was not immediately returned.
