Wolves clinch West Division
WINNIPEG, Manitoba --The Chicago Wolves opened up a 5-2 lead before hanging on to defeat the Manitoba Moose 5-4 at the MTS Centre on Tuesday night.
With the victory, the Wolves clinched the American Hockey League's West Division, their fourth division title in franchise history and first since 2005.
Center Kevin Doell led the charge with 2 goals and 1 assist for the Wolves (49-19-2-3), who hold a 2-point edge in the Western Conference over the Toronto Marlies with seven regular-season games remaining. The 49 wins rank second overall in the AHL.
Doell helped pace a 4-goal, second-period charge, which put the Wolves up for good. Trailing 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes, left wing Colin Stuart opened the scoring for the Wolves when he re-directed a pass from linemate Andre Deveuax. Then Doell scored twice to put the Wolves ahead for good.
Defenseman Chad Denny gave the Wolves a 2-goal cushion with a bomb from just inside the blue line.
Manitoba (42-26-2-4) cut the deficit to 3-2 after Shaun Heshka picked up a loose puck and knocked it past Wolves goaltender Robert Gherson.
