Stone no stranger to White Sox
CLEVELAND -- While he will always be thought of as a Cubs broadcaster and Harry Caray's partner, this is hardly the first time Steve Stone has worked for the White Sox.
He had two stints with the Sox as a pitcher, even leading the 1977 South Side Hit Men in victories with 15.
"People still talk about it as one of the most exciting seasons in the history of the franchise, even though we didn't win anything,'' Stone said. "Most fans don't remember that I pitched for that team because all they remember is the offense.
"I can tell you that they don't remember the defense, because defense wasn't considered mandatory that season, and I'm still waiting for that team to turn its first double play.
"There was no reason for us to go over the defense before any game because no one played defense. It was optional.
"Ralph Garr's process for deciding where to position himself in left was he played catch with the bullpen catcher before an inning, and wherever he was standing when he was done playing catch was where he played that inning.
"It's hard to believe he didn't win a Gold Glove, isn't it?"
