Small business workshops: Entrepreneurs and small business people can improve their business skills by attending a series of workshops presented by the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the College of Lake County. Workshops feature small class sizes, expert instruction and the latest in technology and business trends.

Upcoming workshops include:

• Starting a Business in Illinois: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, cost: $20.

• Do-it-Yourself Web Design: from 7 to 9 p.m. April 9, cost. $35.

• Marketing on the Web Using Constant Contact: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. April 22 and 29, cost: $70.

Alcohol Screening Day: The College of Lake County Health Center will conduct free, anonymous screenings for alcohol problems as part of National Alcohol Screening Day, Thursday. Screenings will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Room C 002 on CLC's Grayslake Campus and are open to anyone in the community.

Screenings will include an educational presentation on alcohol problems, completion of a screening form and a one-on-one, confidential consultation with a health professional. Referrals to local treatment and support resources will be available for those who need further evaluation. Appointments are not necessary.

Learn about horticulture: Learn about a career in horticulture by attending an information session at the College of Lake County this spring, sponsored by the Biological and Health Sciences Division. The college offers an Associate in Applied Science degree and four certificate programs in horticulture.

Horticulture information sessions will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday and May 1 in Room H110 in the Horticulture and Greenhouse Building (Building H), located on the southeast corner of the CLC Grayslake Campus.

The sessions are open to high school students, current or prospective CLC students and the public at large. Industry workers, garden enthusiasts, master gardeners and environmentalists are invited to learn more about the college's various course offerings.

East Asian workshop series:

CLC will present an East Asian Workshop Series in the spring that is open to the community. The series includes five workshops focused specifically on China.

Sessions are held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the CLC Grayslake campus, and include:

• Cultural Elements in Contemporary China on Thursday.

• China's Economy: Achievement and Challenges on April 10.

• Where Do We Go from Here: China's Future on April 17.

Each workshop features lecture, interactive discussion, activities, a question and answer session and refreshments. Participants attending all five workshops will receive a voucher for a Chinese dinner and discussion led by CLC's Chinese visiting faculty member Fangjun Li on April 24. No commitment to attend the complete workshop series is required.

Food and Beverage Servers: The College of Lake County will offer the Beverage and Alcohol Sellers and Servers Educational Training (BASSET - PSST 15) course. This four-hour class is certified by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission and will be offered at 8 a.m. Saturday. The cost is $35.

New Iverson exhibit: A new exhibit, featuring a survey of works by Chicago artist Carrie Iverson is on display through Sunday at the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art at the College of Lake County.

Iverson is a printmaker, painter and glass artist who will exhibit works in these mediums and display a site-specific installation of prints called "Systemic," which commemorates the nearly a quarter of a million victims of the deadly 2004 tsunami.

Also on exhibit at the college will be "Wake," a series of photos of U.S. soldiers killed since the occupation of Iraq. The images first appeared in Iverson's dramatic installation, "Façade Project" at the Chicago Printmakers Collaborative.

The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Mainstage Theatre events: Upcoming professional touring events on the Mainstage Theatre include:

• The African Children's Choir at 7 p.m. Sunday.

• Soul of the Bayou featuring BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet and the subdudes at 7 p.m. April 20.

• A trio of singing sisters, The Roches, for a Mother's Day concert at 4 p.m. May 11.

Brass Choir Concert: The 17-member Brass Choir from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will perform at 8 p.m. April 11. The featured soloist will be Ronald Romm, who was a founding member of the world-renown group, Canadian Brass.

The concert, which will include works by Anton Brucker, Andrea Gabrielli, Matthew Locke, Raphael Mendez, Anthony Plog, Franz Schubert and others, will be held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the Grayslake Campus. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $4 for CLC students, staff, Alumni Association members and Seniors 65 and over. The Box Office opens 90 minutes before the concert begins.

Student Art Exhibition: The 27th Annual Student Art Exhibition, a juried exhibit featuring artwork created by College of Lake County students, will opens April 11 at the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art on the CLC Grayslake Campus.

An opening reception and awards presentation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. April 11 in the gallery. The event will be free and open to the public, and include refreshments and musical entertainment by Jazz Spectrum. The exhibit will continue until May 17.

The Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art is next to the Library/Learning Resource Center on the Grayslake Campus. "How I Learned to Drive": "How I Learned to Drive," the 1998 Pulitzer Prize winner for drama, is a darkly humorous tale that explores the disturbing relationship between a young girl and an older man during a series of driving lessons in the 1960s and '70s. The play contains adult content and is not suitable for children.

The show will be presented at 7:30 p.m. April 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19; and at 2 p.m. April 13 with a post-show discussion in the Studio Theatre. Tickets are $10 each for the general public and $8 for CLC students/staff, seniors 65 and over and JLC season subscribers. Tickets are available at the CLC Box Office in the James Lumber Center on the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Chinese Language Program: Community members are also welcome to attend CLC's Chinese Language Immersion Program sessions from 9 a.m. to noon April 12 and May 10 in the lower lobby of the C Wing at the CLC Grayslake campus. Sessions are open to anyone with a desire to learn Chinese, including adults, high school students and CLC students. No proficiency is required to participate.

The Chinese Language Immersion sessions will feature four or five native Chinese speakers who facilitate a series of language-building activities. Refreshments will be provided, and participants may attend any or all sessions, with no commitment to attend future sessions.

Jazz concert: The College of Lake County Music Department will present a Jazz Ensembles Concert at 4 p.m. April 13 at the Mainstage Theatre in the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts. The final CLC jazz concert of the 2007-08 season will be the 31st Annual Guest Artist Concert at 4 p.m. on May 4, featuring Larry McWilliams on trumpet, John Seidel on trombone and Dick Oatts on saxophone. Oatts will hold a clinic on from noon to 1:30 May 3 in room P101, which is free and open to the public. The Concert Band spring concert will be at 7:30 p.m. on May 8.

Lunch & Learn Workshops: A professional facilitator will deliver one hour of training "Essential Skills of Leadership" from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 15 in room V336, Southlake Campus. Spring literary events: The College of Lake County Literary Arts Society will offer a variety of events for students and the community:

• A reading reception to honor contributors to CLC's 35th edition of the award-winning literary magazine, "Willow Review," will be held at 7 p.m. April 17 in room C003. This free event will feature contributors reading from their original poetry and prose. Copies of the 2008 issue will be available at the reading. "Willow Review" is partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.

• The annual Shakespeare's birthday celebration will be held from noon to 4 p.m. April 23 in the Library/Learning Resource Center Atrium. "Mr. Shakespeare," an authentically costumed reenactor will answer questions about the Elizabethan era and present portions of the Bard's plays. Members of the community, students and professionals will read or act individually and in groups. Cake and other refreshments will be served.

International Film Series: There is no charge for films in the International Film Series, which will be screened at 7 p.m. on Friday nights in room A162 on the CLC Grayslake Campus. The films are subtitled when necessary, have adult content and are not suitable for children. "The Host," which merges a dysfunctional family comedy and a monster movie, will be shown on April 25.
