Check out Algonquin's public art

The Village of Algonquin and Algonquin Public Arts Commission's spring art open house will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Village Hall, 2200 Harnish Drive.

The free event will provide area residents with an opportunity to learn more about Algonquin's award-winning public art program, as well as to meet Public Arts Commission members and view some of their work.

More than 15 fine art pieces will be on display during the open house. Several more are being exhibited all year at village hall as part of Algonquin's annual public art program.

The spring open house is the first in a series of art exhibits and shows Algonquin is planning throughout the year. Details about upcoming events and the fourth annual Algonquin Public Art Display Program will be posted later this spring on the village's Web site, www.algonquin.org.

The Algonquin Public Art Program was established in 2005 to enhance community's sense of place through a celebration of art.

The placement of art in public spaces is intended to enrich, stimulate and enhance the visual experience that is the cornerstone of Algonquin's identity.

In its first three years, the program won awards from Urban Innovation in Illinois, the Illinois chapter of the American Planning Association, and the Illinois Municipal League.
