Go bald to help kids with cancer

The Carpentersville Sport Clips store, 27 S. Western Ave. (Route 31), will host an event today to benefit St. Baldrick's Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., volunteer participants will have their heads shaved by Sport Clips stylists to both raise funds and show camaraderie with the children who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment.

George Koll, manager of the Carpentersville Sport Clips said, "We are extremely honored to be hosting this significant event at our store. Sport Clips stores throughout Chicagoland are hosting various St. Baldrick's in the coming months, and we'd really like to make a difference in the fight against kids' cancer."

According to Koll, his team of stylists hopes to not only raise money for St. Baldrick's Foundation, but also raise cancer awareness in the Carpentersville community.

Everyone is welcome to stop in to participate, pledge or simply observe the fun. Food and beverages will be provided and "Sporty" the Sport Clips mascot will be on hand, as will members of the Carpentersville Fire Department, who are collecting pledges in exchange for the head shaving.

In addition, the Chamber of Commerce will host a ribbon cutting in honor of the grand reopening of the store.

More than 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide each year, and cancer remains the No. 1 disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada. The St. Baldrick's Foundation is Shaving the Way to Conquer Kids' Cancer with the help of thousands of volunteers by raising money for childhood cancer research at its signature head-shaving events.

Volunteer "shavees" sponsored by family, friends and employers go bald in solidarity with kids who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment. Proceeds are granted to the world's leading childhood cancer research institutions.

Since 2000, more than 46,000 heads have been shorn for St. Baldrick's, raising more than $34 million for lifesaving research. St. Baldrick's unites volunteers in one vision -- to deliver cures for all kids by funding cancer research and pediatric oncology fellowships.
