How do you end a war that isn't a war?

Sen. John McCain promises to win the "war" in Iraq if elected president. The only problem, as I see it, is that it's not a "war."

Today, there is no trench warfare. There is no island hopping. There is no Battle of the Bulge. There is no Inchon landing and certainly no 38th parallel.

Unfortunately for our troops, there is not one but hundreds of Ho Chi Minh trails carrying insurgents, lEDs and explosive vests across the borders of Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Jordan into Iraq. We cannot carpet bomb them to stop the flow.

Combat troops are being used as policeĀmen and are walking their beats in Baghdad and Fallujah, hampered by the fact that they do not speak or understand the lanĀguage of the residents.

How does McCain intend to end the "war"? By signing a peace treaty with Osama Bin Laden on the deck of the carrier Enterprise?
