Rail improvements OK'd

The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved a plan to spend more than $139 million to improve highway rail crossings.

The ICC says the plan will affect more than 3,800 crossings over the next five years. Improvements range from flashing light and signal upgrades to bridge and tunnel projects. They also include smaller changes, like new reflective warning and yield signs.

Officials say the money comes from the state's Grade Crossing Protection Fund, railroads and local governments.
