Palatine's secession idea makes sense
Maureen Koziol's letter to the Fence Post on March 13th was spot on.
I too am a resident of Mount Prospect who is concerned about the future in Cook County.
Stroger and his entourage are doing a fine job of increasing their salaries while pushing business, customers and residents right out of Cook County.
They are making it difficult for hard-working residents to make ends meet. I am sure I am not the only one who noticed my annual raise is not able to keep up with the increase in gas, food, utilities, property taxes, and now the whopping 10 percent sales tax.
The Daily Herald reported an increase of 3 to 5 percent by ComEd in June. Residents of Cook County will be forced to relocate or once again, cut our costs. When will Donna Dunnings (Stroger's cousin) and the other politicians cut their $142,000 plus salaries to make ends meet?
Cook County is the second largest county in the country with over 5 million people in 2006. I find it hard to believe 5 million residents and countless tourists are not generating enough revenue at the current sales tax to keep Cook County afloat.
At one time, taxes in Cook County were the same or lower then surrounding counties. My property taxes have skyrocketed during the recent assessment.
I encourage other towns in the Northwest suburbs to follow Palatine in exploring alternatives because DuPage and Lake county are looking like pretty good places to move to right now.
