It's time to revive Lincoln County

The irresponsible and outrageous behavior of the Cook County Board suggests it is now time to revive the Lincoln County proposal that was floated in the 1970s and in the south suburbs in 2004.

Many will recall that the original Lincoln County proposal would have had Barrington, Hanover, Palatine, Schaumburg, Wheeling, and Elk Grove townships breaking away from Cook County to make up the new unit of government -- which would most likely have had the seat of county government set for Arlington Heights.

Currently, the Village of Palatine and Palatine Township are once again mulling over the options for succession from Cook County. Good for them!

In principle, I'm against creating new units of government. However, I'm so darned angry, I'm willing to overlook my misgivings.

Those of us who live in Northwest Cook County are held hostage to a unit of government that is one of the most irresponsible and inefficient in the country.

The Stroger team in Cook County has just given us some of the highest taxes in the country; scores of high-paying jobs filled by Stronger and Cook County Board member relatives and friends; and the financial albatross known as Stroger Hospital. In return, Northwest Cook County received few services.

The Northwest suburbs do not have, and won't ever have, the votes needed to bring coherence and rationality to the administration of the county.

Something needs to be done. Hail Lincoln County!
