Libertyville over Hilton Head Prep 3-1

Libertyville assistant girls soccer coach Chris Moore said it warmed up during the day to about 65-70 degrees in Hilton Head, S.C., on Wednesday.

Leigha Bystol?

The senior heated up on the field.

Bystol scored twice to lift Libertyville to a 3-1 win over Hilton Head Prep.

It was the season opener for the Wildcats, whose game will be their only one in South Carolina before heading home.

Sophomore Michele McCracken assisted on both Bystol goals for Libertyville, which led 1-0 at halftime before Hilton Head Prep netted the equalizer. Freshman Haley Pike also scored for the Wildcats.

Mundelein 1, Burlington C. 0: At Oak Park-River Forest, sophomore Mandi Affolter scored with five minutes left to lift the Mustangs.

Junior Kim Carroll and senior Kayla Siebert set up the goal. Junior Nikki Allen made 5 saves in goal to notch the shutout.

Warren Invitational: The sunny skies and dry courts allowed the Blue Devils' annual event to be played at five Lake County high school sites.

Lakes, Larkin, Peoria Richwoods and Warren's No. 1 team each went 4-0. Going 3-1 were Dundee-Crown, Grayslake Central, Palatine, Rock Island and Rockford Jefferson.

Mundelein went only 1-4, but the Mustangs received 3-1 efforts from No. 1 singles player Tyler Patner and the No. 3 doubles team of Brian Panganiban and Chris Deri.

Baseball

Mundelein 9, Cobden 1: At Rent One Park in downstate Marion, senior Jack Walliser went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, and junior Colton Tortorello was 2-for-3 for the Mustangs.

Senior Justin Piasecki earned the win for Mundelein (4-0), allowing 1 run over 5 innings. He struck out six, walked two and yielded 4 hits. Tortorello finished up on the mound, giving up just 1 hit.

Junior Dillon Smith had the Mustangs' only extra-base hit, a double.

Grayslake C. 15, Moody 4: In the Ballard Classic, the Rams scored early and often against Moody (Ala.) on a rainy night in Louisville.

Shawn Tobie kick-started the Rams offense by blasting a 3-run homer in the first inning. Grayslake Central scored 3 runs in the second inning and then added 8 more in the third inning to take a commanding 15-0 lead.

Also putting up offensive numbers for the Rams (2-1) were Jordaan Williams with 3 singles, Nick Tielke with 2 singles and 2 RBI, Kurt Schmidt with a triple and Aaron Snyder with a double.

Sophomore Kevin DeRue earned his first varsity win by tossing the first 4½ innings. DeRue struck out three and walked one. Zack Dorfman came on to record the final two outs for the Rams.

"Shawn gave us a nice start in the first inning with the homer, and things seemed to go our way from there," said Rams coach Troy Whalen. "As expected, we played better today compared to Monday or Tuesday and Kevin did a great job of keeping the ball down against a very good-hitting team. The conditions were wet and not ideal for pitching, but he gave us everything he had.

"We are slowly taking steps in the right direction and have a long way to go, but the kids are working extremely hard. These spring trips are a great way for the kids to get to know each other better and to come together as a team. It's nice to see that happening right in front of us."

Grayslake Central 6, Medina Heights 3: On Tuesday night in Kentucky, the Rams got their first win of the season, as starting pitcher Kevin O'Rourke combined with Mitch Tielke and Steve Gawinski to record 9 strikeouts against Medina Heights (Ohio).

O'Rourke tossed 4 shutout innings. Offensively, sophomore Mike Gentile had a double, 2 singles and 2 RBI, Matt Schmidt added a pair of singles, and Jordaan Williams contributed a double.

"Our pitching was the difference tonight," said Rams coach Troy Whalen. "All three guys located well for the most part and we played errorless defense behind them. Offensively, we had some nice ABs tonight, especially (from) Gentile. For a sophomore, he's doing a nice job of learning hitting situations and both RBI hits tonight came with two strikes."
