Smith goes deep again
With a strong wind blowing in at Carbondale High School's baseball field Tuesday, it wasn't an ideal day.
That didn't matter to Mundelein's Dillon Smith.
Smith jacked a two-run homer into what coach Todd Parola called "about a 40 mile-per-hour wind," as the Mustangs went to defeat the host school 10-2.
It was the second home run in as many days for Smith, a junior, who also had a well-hit sacrifice fly.
"He absolutely crushed it," Parola said. "It was one of the hardest-hit balls I've seen since I've been here."
Kevin Barber and Jack Walliser each had 2 hits for Mundelein (3-0). Jay Mueller earned the win, allowing only 1 hit and 1 unearned run over 4 innings. He struck out five and walked three.
Mundelein will play Cobden at 3 p.m. today at Rent One Park in Marion. Rent One Park, which opened last year, is home of the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League.
Libertyville 6, H. Mann 1: Libertyville's baseball team got its season off to a good start Tuesday.
Troy Barton allowed just 1 hit and 1 run over 5 innings, striking out nine and walking three, as the Wildcats defeated Horrace Mann (N.Y.) 6-1 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Libertyville pounded out 6 hits, including triples by Tim Matheson, Chase Guarnaccio and Joey Aiello. Matheson and Guarnaccio had 2 hits apiece.
Brooks McDowell pitched 2 scoreless innings and allowed just 1 hit for the Wildcats, whose spring trip continues today with a scheduled game against host Notre Dame Prep (Ariz.).
