Illinois extends AD Guenther's contract, gives him a raise

URBANA - Illinois Athletic Director Ron Guenther has a new contract. It's one that will keep him on the job through 2010 and pay him $600,000 a year.

University of Illinois' board of trustees approved the deal Wednesday.

The new contract gives Guenther a $75,000-a-year raise and will pay him a $100,000 bonus if he stays through the end of the deal. His contract was due to expire at the end of this year.

Guenther - who is 62 - has been AD at Illinois since 1992. He played football at the school in the mid 1960s.

He successfully pushed to expand Memorial Stadium and has said the university should renovate Assembly Hall or build a new basketball arena.
