"One Book, One District":ŒThe community is invited to take part in the fifth annual "One Book, One District" program by reading the same book and participating in a number of events.

This year's selection is "Death of a Thousand Cuts," a mystery by Barbara D'Amato. D'Amato, an area resident, is a noted author and recipient of numerous literary awards.

D'Amato will be on hand from 2 to 4 p.m. April 5 to discuss her book. Books will be available at the Reader Assistance Desk, located on the first floor.

Many programs will be offered throughout April to enhance the "One Book, One District" experience. Registration is required for all programs. Register online at palatinelibrary.org or call (847) 358-5881, ext. 132.

Police/author panel:ŒFrom 2 to 4 p.m. April 6, enjoy a discussion panel of local authors who are all current or former police officers or detectives.

Attendees can meet Michael Black, Dave Case, Doug Cummings, James Jack, Thomas Keevers and David J. Walker. Also in attendance will be moderators and mystery authors Libby Fischer Hellmann and Mary Welk.

Dementia and the environment:ŒAt 2 p.m. April 10, Dr. Michael Cody of Cody Chiropractic will discuss common toxins in the environment that may lead to premature dementia in individuals.

Cody will also suggest alternative natural options. This program is sponsored by Sunrise Assisted Living of Barrington.

Celebrate National Library Week:ŒApril 13-19 is National Library Week. Celebrate with the Palatine Public Library.

Library patrons check out more than 1.8 million items a year. To celebrate, for every 1,000 items checked out at the main library, a lucky patron will receive a prize.

The Freeman Road and Rand Road branches will participate as well.

Teen Book Club:ŒThe Teen Book Club meets April 15 to discuss "The Third Eye" by Lois Duncan. The club is open to seventh- through 12th-grade readers.

Writing workshop:ŒFrom 2 to 4 p.m. April 19, meet author Libby Fischer Hellmann, who will present a workshop on researching and writing historical fiction.

The 20-20-20 Workshop will feature dialogue, plot and research. The workshop is open to the public.

Adult book discussion:ŒAt 7 p.m. April 24, adult readers can discuss the "One Book One District" choice, "Death of a Thousand Cuts" by Barbara D'Amato.

Understanding autism:ŒAt 2 p.m. April 26, learn more about autism, a condition discussed in "Death of a Thousand Cuts."

Linda Hoeck, autism coordinator for the Northwest Suburban Special Education Association, will illuminate various aspects of the disorder and address audience questions.

Crime scene at the library:ŒMany have read the books and seen the shows, but may not know how professionals handle a "real world" homicide investigation.

From 2 to 4 p.m. May 3, a panel will compare real-life processes to those portrayed in the media. The panel will consist of moderator and author Linda Mickey, media specialist Doug Cummings, and guests from other agencies.

Mother/Daughter Book Club: The first Thursday and Monday of each month, the library offers a Mother/Daughter Book Discussion. This group is open to girls in third through sixth grade and their mothers. Books are available at the library. Register online or call (847) 358-5881, ext. 132.

Wireless access available: The Palatine Public Library offers wireless, WiFi, access to the Internet for users with wireless-enabled laptop computers, tablet PCs or PDAs.

The library's network is open to all visitors, free of charge. No special encryption settings, user names or passwords are required. The library's Internet usage policies apply to all Internet access in the building.

Online payments:ŒThe Palatine Public Library offers a convenient way to make online payments with E-Pay. Palatine Public Library District cardholders can use MasterCard, American Express or Discover credit cards to pay fines, program fees, or purchase gifts to the library.

24-hour access:ŒWith audio and e-books available online, the Palatine Public Library is always open. Patrons can browse, checkout, and download digital audiobooks and e-books any time of day from anywhere in the world.

To get started, visit online at palatinelibrary.org, click on My Media Mall, install the free software then browse through the collection. Enter a library card and download the digital books to a home computer.

Book Club in a Bag:ŒThe Palatine Public Library District makes it easy for patrons to set up their own book club by providing a Book Club in a Bag.

A canvas tote bag is filled with book titles to be used for a book discussion. Included is a list of questions to use for the book discussion and tips to make the club a success.

Return the bag when the group is finished, and check out another for the next club meeting. For more information, call (847) 358-5881, ext. 132.

Homebound Service: Homebound Service is available for Palatine Public Library District residents unable to come to the library for 30 days or more, and have no one to pick up materials for them.

Baby Book Gift Program:ŒNew parents are welcome to stop by the main library, the Freeman Road Branch, or the Rand Road Branch to pick up a free board book and informational packet for their new baby.
