Mundelein delays Fuel Bar decision
A hearing to decide whether an embattled Mundelein bar will keep its liquor license has been continued until next month.
Mundelein's liquor control commission -- consisting of the village board and mayor -- will meet at 9 p.m. April 28 to consider the fate of Fuel Bar & Grill, 330 Townline Road.
The hearing began Monday night but was continued at the request of the attorney for the bar's owner.
Owner Nick Asiuras and seven other people were arrested March 12 after a two-month undercover police investigation into drug sales and other activity at the bar.
A bartender, bouncer and a patron each sold drugs to undercover officers during the investigation, authorities said. Additionally, the bar was running illegal bean-bag contests for money, police said.
In a list of 20 violations, police also allege:
• A female customer danced topless on the bar and was allowed to remain at Fuel.
• A DJ mixed clips from pornographic movies into videos.
• Underage customers purchased alcoholic beverages.
• Smoking was allowed inside.
Asiuras has repeatedly declined to comment about the investigation and the arrests. Accompanied by his attorney and supporters, he did so again Monday after the brief hearing.
The liquor commission could revoke or suspend Fuel's liquor license or deny its renewal. The commission could fine Asiuras, too.
It's the second run-in with the law for the Fuel Bar this year. In January, Asiuras was fined $600 by the liquor commission after two employees were caught selling alcohol to patrons without first undergoing mandatory state training.
