Chicago students get escort to class

Police and community leaders have escorted a half-dozen high school students to class following the shooting death of a classmate.

Officials said Operation Safe Passage helps students feel protected on their way to and from Crane Tech High School on the city's West Side.

Ten adults, including Alderman Robert Fioretti and Crane Tech Principal Richard Smith, joined the students Monday for a three-block walk from the ABLA Homes public housing complex to a bus stop.

Police escorted the students' bus to school. Students from the complex feared retaliation after a 15-year-old ABLA resident was charged with fatally shooting a Crane student earlier this month.

Parents said they'll continue accompanying their children to and from school until everyone feels safe
