Wheeling High announces its students of the month

Wheeling High School had named its Students of the Month for February.

Senior Heather Brozowski was nominated by staff member Jamie Karavouzis for her work in life studies.

"Heather is a student in the Practicum in Early Childhood Education course," Karavouzis said. "This is Heather's third time in my class and she has always done an outstanding job. Heather is a quick learner and because of that she has become an extra set of hands in the preschool that I can truly count on to help. Heather does a great job of seeing what needs to be done and then taking initiative to complete the task. Heather also became our classroom tutor as she helps to look over the high school student's final projects checking spelling and grammar. Heather truly loves kids; I always hear her comment how sad she is on days when the preschool children don't come to school. She is a natural when it comes to teaching the preschool children and has taken on teaching by herself instead of in a group. She has all the necessary qualities to become a great teacher; she is patient, caring, consistent, creative, loud and hardworking. She always gives her work in the preschool her best effort and is a big reason why the Wee Willie's Preschool program is so successful."

Junior Michael Guccione was nominated by staff member Stephanie Keber for his work in English.

"Mike is a positive, hard working, and dedicated student," Keber said. "He has great respect for his work, his teacher and peers. He is always contributing to class discussions and has a positive attitude. In addition to his efforts, Mike has a sense of humor and students enjoy being around him. He works well with everyone and always wears a friendly smile. Mike is an ideal student who cares about the quality of his work and pours so much effort, heart and soul into everything he does. I am thrilled to nominate him as student of the month for English."

Junior Esmeralda Hernandez was nominated by staff member Rebecca Castro for her work in foreign language.

"Some of her achievements so far this term include getting an 'A' on every assignment (including 12 grades of 100 percent), creating a movie, being a team leader and motivating other students," Castro said. "She participates consistently in class, uses Spanish 100 percent of the time in the classroom and will ask difficult questions."

"As the course material gets increasingly difficult, Esmeralda rises to the challenge and maintains a high average. Whether it's grammar, geography, a presentation, a reading, or vocabulary activities, Esmeralda finds success with all she does due not only to her natural abilities, but also to her work ethic. Through it all, she maintains a positive attitude and always has a smile on her face. Finally, Esmeralda has never been absent and never been late. I'm also pretty sure she's never spent her pesos either."

Freshman Karla McDaniel was nominated by staff member Laura Faber for her work in student services.

"Karla has exemplified what it means to be a true WHS student," Faber said. "She has almost perfect attendance and continuously works hard in her classes. She is persistent in her tasks and never settles for second best. In addition, she will continuously work to understand her work and always asks for help when it's needed. Karla uses self-motivation to accomplish her schoolwork and has even gone out for the track team this year in order to challenge herself outside of the school day. She is a wonderful student and we are lucky to have her at WHS."

Senior Dulce Martinez was nominated by staff member Anne Martin for her work in U.S. history.

"Dulce deserves to be recognized for her positive attitude and persistent work ethic in U.S. history class," Martin said. "Dulce has been in other classes with me and she has overcome many academic challenges here at Wheeling. She is excelling in U.S. history and it is due to her effort and dedication to succeed."

Senior Gina Schaefer was nominated by staff member Jo Anne Olaes for her work in business.

"Gina has taken both Web Programming and Web Design with me," Olaes said. "She has taken that knowledge and created Web pages that benefit our current school Web site. She has created a new Spokesman site, which is just waiting for review, and also an AP information site, which is currently posted. She is now working on a site for AP English. Gina's work is a great example of the practical application of skills learned in class."

Sophomore Jacquelyn Lyons was nominated by staff member Rebeccah Silver for her work in art.

"Jackie has never taken a single class with me, yet she is one of my most enthusiastic students," Silver said. "She will come down to the art room during her lunch, and when she is able, during her study hall to work on her individual art projects. As a service learner, she has assisted in the prep of many art activities such as the creation of cast hands. This activity required many hours prior to the presentation to prep the materials and learn the technique she would be sharing with others. Jackie enthusiastically rose to the challenge."

Freshman Maria Avila was nominated by staff member Karen Sebesta for her work in reading.

"Maria has made significant improvements this year in both her reading skills and attitude," Sebesta said "She has become more focused in class and works hard on improving her overall grade average. Maria approaches the class work seriously and asks for assistance when needed. She is able to take direction and constructive feedback. Maria is a hard working young woman who is motivated to move into more challenging situations. Recently, I was very impressed with her willingness to help other students who were having problems answering questions from the reading. She carefully showed them how to find the answers and understood that the answer needed to come from the students. She has become a good role model in the class."

Senior Steven Slussar was nominated by staff member Jeffrey Bott for his work in architecture.

"Steven has been a part of the drafting program for the past 4 years at Wheeling," Bott said. "He has had a huge part in the growth of the program with all of his hard work and efforts. He was selected to take part in a District Design contest where he was put in charge of building a 3-D model. Steven is an extremely bright and talented young adult. He has a successful future ahead of him as the owner, CEO, and co-founder of Slussar Slushie's. He will be missed at WHS."

Sophomore Janelle Samuels was nominated by staff member Jason Kopkowski for her work in health education.

"Janelle Samuels is one of the most determined and focused students that have been enrolled in Health Education this year," Kopkowski said. "She has completed all of her assignments on time with a great deal of energy, effort, and creativity. Her assignments also have been used as examples for other students. Janelle sets the standards for great work. She leads by example, asking questions when others would not. She shares information that helps the topic make sense to other students and helps other students when they are in need. One of Janelle's best qualities is her upbeat personality. A day does not go by without Janelle smiling as well as making others smile. Her humility is another great quality, never asking for anything in return even after she has gone out of her way to help someone else. Best of all, Janelle has many goals that she wants to achieve in the upcoming years and it is so nice to see a student striving in the right direction. I know that Janelle will achieve her goals because of her work ethic, her attitude, and her generosity. It is with great pleasure that I recommend Janelle Samuels for Student of the Month for February 2008."

Junior Megan Boyk was nominated by staff member Elizabeth Magill for her work in music.

"Megan Boyk has been a leader in all of the arts and particularly the WHS Orchestras," Magill said. "Since her freshman year, Megan has taken the initiative of leading sectionals, running rehearsals in the absence of a teacher, organizing papers, creating music files, reminding students of upcoming events and requirements, and being an overwhelming positive force. Her enthusiastic attitude is contagious and makes anyone's day brighter. While she is a fantastic viola player, her singing is what makes people laugh. Megan is the most energetic leader the WHS Orchestra has and because of her, the program is a better and brighter place."

Seniors Vanessa Cuevas and Britten Wilson were nominated by staff member Rita Runyard for their work in physical education.

"Vanessa and Britten have done an outstanding job for my Freshmen PE class," Runyard said. "Everyday they take leadership and conduct warm ups. They assist me in the teaching and demonstration of activities. Furthermore, every other day is a workout. Vanessa and Britten not only plan and conduct the workouts, but they also participate. They always have smiles on their faces, listen to the students when they have problems, and provide a positive role model to the young students at Wheeling High School. I am pleased to have these students as part of my class, and as leaders to our school."
