One charged in DUI crash

A 32-year-old St. Charles man fled the scene of a drunken-driving crash late Wednesday with a 4-year-old child in tow, police said Friday. Roberto Salinas-Lopez, of 202 W. Main St., is charged with aggravated DUI, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and endangering the life of a child. Shortly before midnight Wednesday, police said Salinas-Lopez fled the scene of a crash at Kirk Road and Ohio Avenue in which one person in the other vehicle was hurt. A witness followed Salinas-Lopez and reported his location to police. He later failed a field sobriety test. If convicted of all three charges, Salinas-Lopez faces up to seven years in prison. His bond was set Friday at $2,500. He has a Wednesday court date.

Wredling takes first place

For the first time in 13 years, students from Wredling Middle School in St. Charles won first place at the College of DuPage Science Olympiad recently. Fifteen Wredling students competed March 8 in the regional event. Bringing home first-place honors were Meenakshi Bhati, Ritika Rastogi, Andrew Szyman and Will DeBord. Wredling also won 16 second- and third-place medals. The team competes next in the State Science Olympiad at the University of Illinois April 26.

School windows broken

A number of windows were broken between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 5:30 a.m. Thursday at Burlington Central High School in an apparent act of vandalism, Kane County Sheriff's Department officials said. Several large windows were discovered broken Thursday morning, along with windows on four vehicles in the school's lot. Estimated damage is between $10,000 and $20,000.

Group seeks volunteers

The Downtown St. Charles Partnership will have a volunteer information session from 9 to 10 a.m. today at city hall, 2 E. Main St. Residents and business owners who attend will learn how to get involved with the nonprofit organization, which promotes business in and around downtown St. Charles. North baseball fundraiser

Former Kansas City Royals scout and professional baseball manager Mike Pinto will speak today at a fundraiser to benefit St. Charles North High School baseball. The free public event is from 12:30 to 3 p.m. in the auditorium at North, 255 Red Gate Road, and also will include a live auction at 2:30 p.m. Auction items include hotel stays, Cubs tickets and autographed Major League Baseball Hall of Fame items. Free Easter breakfast

Tri-City Salvation Army will have a free Easter breakfast for those in need Sunday at the Joe K. Anderson Community Center, 1710 S. Seventh Ave. The meal will be from 9:15 to 10 a.m. and will include small gifts and candy. A chapel service will follow. Call (630) 377-2769.

'Live Like You Were Dying'

Beginning Sunday, the public can participate in a monthlong, communitywide campaign sponsored by Tri-City Salvation Army.
