Briefs: Longwood school on lockdown
Longwood Elementary School in Naperville was locked down briefly Thursday as Naperville police and DuPage County sheriff's deputies investigated a person in the area with what turned out to be an air/pellet rifle, according to an e-mail the school sent to parents. After about 10 minutes police gave the school the all-clear. The person with the air rifle is in custody.
Fire hydrant flushing
Lombard public works crews will perform their annual fire hydrant flushing program from April through May. Workers will flush more than 2,500 hydrants. The program is a vital part of the water pumping and distribution system maintenance schedule, village officials said. Each hydrant is thoroughly inspected and operated. Golf event to aid homeless
Golfers can help the homeless in the Chip-In For Hesed House charity golf outing on April 19 at Fox Bend Golf Club, 3516 Route 34, Oswego. Registration is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at the outing being sponsored by students at Aurora University on behalf of the homeless shelter. Fire hits apartment
Downers Grove firefighters Thursday were investigating the cause of a blaze that did about $65,000 damage to a third-floor apartment at 2048 Prentiss Drive. Firefighters said they responded to an alarm at 7:14 p.m. Wednesday and arrived to find heavy smoke from the floor to ceiling. The fire was contained to a single apartment, officials said, and no injuries were reported. Crews remained on the scene for more than two hours.
