New on DVD
These DVDs were released this week:
"I Am Legend"
It is 2012, and New York City is deserted. Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the only human alive. A virus has mutated humans into zombies, and Neville spends his days trying to find a cure. He has his faithful dog, Sam, with him, and scenes will remind you of Tom Hanks in "Castaway." Two more survivors appear, and Neville must protect them. The action sequences and special effects are terrific, as we are left to try and understand intelligent ideas.
"Atonement"
On an estate in England before World War II, a 13-year-old girl is jealous of the relationship between her sister and a servant. When a girl is raped on the lawn, the teenager comes forward with a lie that will alter the lives of the three of them forever. The servant goes to fight for England, while the sisters become nurses. The great-looking film is one of the best of the year and shows us that everything we do has consequences.
"Enchanted"
In the animated world of Andalasia, Giselle (Amy Adams) falls for a prince (James Marsden). His step-mother Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon) isn't happy about it, so she banishes Giselle to New York City. The characters come alive, and Giselle is stranded until she is rescued by Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and his young daughter. Giselle must decide who is her real prince. There is a lot of singing and dancing, and fans of Disney's magic will not be disappointed.
"Love in the Time of Cholera"
Based on the best-selling novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the story takes place during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Florentino Ariza (Javier Bardem) is an old man attending the funeral of Juvenal Urbino (Benjamin Bratt). He is there to tell Juvenal's widow Femina (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) how much he has always loved her. She rejects him, and the movie goes back 50 years to relive the lives of the characters. The sets and cinematography are beautiful, while the adult story is more than a tale of love and obsession.
