Bears, Buczynski rolling along
Lake Zurich's softball team is off to a good start, and so is senior pitcher Katie Buczynski.
On Day 2 of Barrington's Spring Fling at the Fields of Dreams on Wednesday, Buczynski threw a shutout for the second day in a row.
She allowed only 3 hits, while striking out nine and not walking a batter, as Lake Zurich defeated Warren 5-0.
Buczynski, who signed with Heartland Community College in January, also went 3-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBI.
Ella Aslan and Laura Yapelli each had a hit and an RBI for Lake Zurich (2-0). Ashley Wright had a single as well.
Warren (1-1) got a double from Jenna Anderson. Sarah Clauser had 2 singles.
Warren 5, Glenbrook N. 0: On Tuesday at Barrington's Fields of Dreams, the Blue Devils won an eight-inning game in their season opener. Sam Berrios pitched, while Kellie Kraft and Alex Booker delivered key hits.
Girls water polo
Glenbrook North 11, Libertyville 9: Sarah Cull scored 6 goals in the losing effort for the Wildcats.
Boys volleyball
Antioch d. Lakes: The Sequoits won 25-18, 25-19, as Sam Potkonjak delivered 8 kills.
Antioch also got contributions from Shane Zobel (9 digs), Jeff Sprague (12 assists) and Eric Smith (2 aces).
Lake Forest d. Carmel: Josh Garwood and Joe Sponseller had 11 and 9 kills, respectively, but the Corsairs fell 23-25, 26-24, 25-22.
Mike Dietrich lofted 23 assists for Carmel (1-1). Sponseller also had 3 blocks, while Garwood recorded a pair. Carmel coach Kevin Nylen called it an "intense, emotional match by both teams."
Palatine d. Libertyville: The visiting Wildcats lost their season opener 28-26, 25-23.
J.J. Hill had 6 kills for Libertyville, while Nick Olson had 11 assists.
Girls soccer
Fremd 3, Lake Zurich 1: Mackenzie Ryan scored the lone goal for the Bears in their season opener. Jenna Therrian assisted.
