Aurora man arrested in California with 15-year-old runaway
A 42-year-old Aurora man was arrested this week in California after fleeing Illinois with a 15-year-old runaway and engaging in sex acts with her, authorities said Wednesday.
Darryl E. Kelly, whose last known address was at a homeless shelter on the 600 block of South River Street, has been charged under California state law with multiple counts of engaging in lewd acts with a minor, statutory rape and failing to register as a sex offender, Aurora police said.
Kelly also was served with two warrants by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, which took him into custody Monday.
The girl who accompanied Kelly to California apparently went willingly, police said. She was located with him at the time of his arrest, and arrangements are being made to return her to her family in Aurora.
The girl's mother reported her missing Dec. 17, 2007, after she had not seen her for three days, police said. She also informed officers that her daughter had been keeping company with Kelly and that she talked of moving to California.
The girl's mother furnished detectives with cell phone information belonging to a relative of Kelly's. Police also searched the girl's MySpace account and were able to subpoena records for both the cell phone and the Internet site.
Police said those records indicated the items were being used in the Los Angeles area. Officers were able to pinpoint an address for the relative who owned the cell phone and contacted the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Both Kelly and the 15-year-old were located at the address of Kelly's relative, police said. The girl was taken into protective custody.
