Teen mothers displaced by fire at shelter

Authorities say about 40 teenage mothers and children were displaced by a fire that was accidentally set by a worker at the facility.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says the fire late Tuesday caused extensive damage to the two-story building on the city's North Side.

An official of New Moms Inc. says the shelter serves as temporary housing for homeless teenage girls with children or teenage expectant mothers. In addition to offering housing, the company has programs teaching the residents life skills.

At the time of the blaze, most of the residents were at another location for a program. No one was injured in the fire.

Shelter officials say they are looking for a place for the mothers and children to live.

Langford says the exact cause of the blaze hasn't been determined.
