Portraits of YWCA Leader Luncheon Award winners: More than 140 portraits of local women currently grace the Gail Borden Public Library art walls, courtesy of the YWCA of Elgin. Since 1984, the YWCA has honored women for their leadership and contributions. Their portraits are shown annually at the Leader Luncheon and they are available for all to enjoy right now at the library's main art walls through the end of March. Some of the women in this community who have been recognized at the YWCA Leader Luncheon are: Rowena Swan, Phyllis Folarin, Clare Ollayos, Marlene Shales, Jeanette Mihalec, Cindy Cianco, Carol Gieske, Ronell Hilton DeLoncker, Sue Moylan, Carolyn O'Neal, Barbara Geister Belding, Murna Hansemann, Lilia Feliciano, Elizabeth B. Juergensmeyer, Joan Berna, Edna Holland, Ellie MacKinney, Patricia Piper Golden, Nancy Epping, Marie Yearman, jean Muntz, May Vickers, Sandra Buchheit, Judy Jobe, Loni Mecum, Lillian Dixon, Sister June Does, Judi Brownfield, Ruth Tofanelli and Betty Brown.

Learning about Jane Addams: "Jane Addams and the Potential of Women: Her Growth as a Social Reformer" will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 1 in the Community Rooms. Sponsored in collaboration with the local chapter of the American Association of University Women, Louise W. Knight, author of "Citizen: Jane Addams and the Struggle for Democracy," will trace how Addams' early struggles with failure during an era of limited opportunities for women shaped her ideas about women's potential and her social reform activism. Book sales and signing follow the program. Registration is required.

Play exploring relations between nations: "Among the Individuals, as well as Among Nations" will be presented from 2 to 4 p.m. April 6 in the community rooms. This play by Judge Manuel Barbosa will be about Abraham Lincoln and Mexican President Benito Juarez, who were contemporaries during the 19th century. Find out what happens when they meet each other in heaven. No registration is required.

Islam in America: "Roots of Islam in America" will be presented from 7 to 8 p.m. April 8 in the Community Rooms. This history of Muslims in the United States, who might have come to the Americas before Columbus, and certainly as enslaved West Africans and pioneers from the Middle East, is a compelling piece of the American story. Registration is required.

Discover Laotion culture: "Taste of Lao" will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. April 10 in the Community Rooms. More than 10,000 Laotians live in the community. Discover their rich culture by meeting the people, sampling food and enjoying a live performance of traditional dance. No registration is required.
