Explosive detonated inside Elgin's Wing Park bandshell
A worker picking up trash in Elgin's Wing Park Monday morning discovered that an explosive device had gone off in the park's bandshell, officials confirmed.
The worker discovered evidence of the already detonated device, but the city hasn't received any reports recently of an explosion, city officials said.
That person alerted police at 9:30 a.m., police spokeswoman Ann Dinges said.
The Elgin Symphony Orchestra is among the acts that uses the bandshell every year.
Elgin police are holding onto the device's remnants and will forward the pieces onto the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which has joined the investigation, Dinges said.
Due to the nature of the probe, police are not releasing information about the sort of explosive it was or its description, Dinges said.
Earlier reports indicated it may have been a pipe bomb.
No arrests have been made.
