Driver misses deer, hits tree in Elgin
A Hampshire man was taken to an Elgin hospital with serious injuries this morning after he swerved to avoid a deer and hit a tree, police said.
The accident took place at 1:22 a.m. on Highland Avenue east of Damisch Road.
"The lack of a seat belt certainly contributed to the extent of his injuries," Elgin Police Sgt. Glen Theriault said.
Slippery roads may have also played a role in the accident.
The driver, Oscar Olvera of Hampshire, was still in his vehicle when emergency crews arrived.
Olvera, who had no passengers, was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin.
