Floyd struggles in rain
TUCSON, Ariz. -- With a steady rain falling before Sunday's Cactus League game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, White Sox starting pitcher Gavin Floyd wasn't quite sure what to expect.
"You're not sure if you're going to actually pitch or go to the cage and get a simulated game going," Floyd said. "They were putting the tarp on, taking it off, putting it on. It didn't look like the mountains were showing out there, so it didn't look like we were going to get the game in."
The game was played, but Floyd never looked comfortable while allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits and 3 walks over 4 innings.
"The first inning, I just went and sat there for a while and tried to get warmed up again," said Floyd, the Sox' fifth starter. "It took me awhile to really get my rhythm; it took me 3 innings to get it going. The last inning, I finally got my rhythm and it was done."
Floyd struck out Dan Haren and Chris Young in the fourth inning while holding the Diamondbacks scoreless.
"He struggled in the beginning," Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He was getting behind hitters, getting hit, but all of a sudden he pitched 1 good inning. It was a tough day to pitch. It was cold and windy and the game was delayed. Different things went around him."
In the mix: Ehren Wasserman and Nick Masset are fighting for the final spot in the bullpen, but D.J. Carrasco also is getting some notice.
"Carrasco's doing great," Ozzie Guillen said. "It's one of the reasons he's still here, because we want to take a longer look at him. He throws strikes and he's got experience. We like him, but unfortunately we can only keep 12 pitchers."
Carrasco, 30, is a nonroster invitee. The right-handed reliever has pitched 7 innings in the Cactus League and has allowed 1 run on 5 hits.
Wasserman has pitched 7½ innings and has allowed 3 runs on 4 hits. Masset, who is out of minor-league options, has pitched 13½ innings this spring and has allowed 6 runs on 17 hits.
Carrasco spent three seasons (2003-05) with the Kansas City Royals, going 14-15 with a 4.81 ERA.
Let's eat: General manager Kenny Williams on Sunday was asked to comment on a Chicago Sun-Times story in which Ozzie Guillen said he'd be willing to "rip up" his contract if the Sox struggle again this season.
"Let me just say this," Williams said. "I'm much more concerned what may or may not be in the buffet line over here at lunch then I am about those comments."
