'Protect American Values' talk
The League of Women Voters' March public program "Protecting American Values in a Time of Terrorism" will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Arlington Heights Historical Society, 110 W. Fremont.
Ed Yohnka, director of communications and public policy for the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois will discuss such questions as "What really provides safety and security?" and "What are the Checks and Balances on Executive Authority?" For more information, call Cathy at (847) 437-6956.
Center will be open before, after school
Registration is now being taken at Mother's Touch Learning Center, 1200 S. Dunton, Arlington Heights for its new grade one through grade six before and after school program, starting with the 2008-2009 school year. Program highlights include breakfast and snacks, homework help, activity areas and a quiet area. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Transportation will be provided to public school. Days off school and snow day supervision will be offered, as well as guaranteed space in its holiday/summer camp programs. For more information, call (847) 357-1721.
Hersey senior given service award
Amy Dolezal, 18, of Arlington Heights and a senior at John Hersey High School, has been honored with a President's Volunteer Service Award. The award recognizes Americans who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities.
Dolezal's volunteer activities included the school's Service Over Self program, coordinating an intergenerational home maintenance program to assist low-income senior citizens, raising money for Kiwanis Club and collecting food for needy families.
