$2 million bond for Carol Stream man in mother's murder

A Carol Stream man accused of stabbing his mother and then defacing her body with household chemicals will have to post $2 million to get out of jail after a Sunday morning bond hearing.

Robert R. Lyons, 35, has been charged with one count of first degree murder. His mother, Linda R. Bolek, 61, was found dead Friday on the kitchen floor of her Carol Stream condominium on Klein Creek Court.

Prosecutor Joseph A Ruggiero said Bolek was stabbed nine times, and Lyons then poured chemicals on her.

Lyons has made a videotaped statement regarding the murder, Ruggiero said. Neither Ruggiero nor Carol Stream Police Chief Rick Willing would say what the motive was for the killing.

Lyons had been living with Bolek in the condominium for about a year, according to neighbors.

Police were called to the Carol Stream condo at 3:17 p.m. Friday regarding a possible domestic dispute and a request to check on the well-being of residents.

Willing said the call came from someone in the condo who said Lyons might be agitated and needed to be checked on.

Carol Stream police found the apartment unlocked and discovered Bolek in the kitchen. Willing would not say if the murder weapon was recovered.

Police immediately put out an alert to surrounding police departments to be on the lookout for Lyons.

They found the Ford Escape Lyons was apparently driving parked in the Woodfield Mall parking lot and began searching local businesses to find him.

Lyons was apprehended at 8:53 p.m. at Hooter's Restaurant, 1705 E. Golf Road in Schaumburg. He was arrested without incident, Willing said.

The DuPage County coroner's office conducted an autopsy Saturday, but would not release the results.

Lyons has an outstanding criminal charge in Kane County for phone harassment, according to officials at the DuPage County Jail.

Officials said bond for that charge is set at $5,000, of which Lyons must post 10 percent.

Lyons also has an outstanding civil court matter in Chicago for which he owes $750, jail officials said.
