Diamondbacks edge Sox 6-5
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona's Dan Haren felt right at home today in the cold and wet of Tucson.
"That's a summer evening in Oakland," the ex-A's pitcher said after going five innings against the Chicago White Sox in his longest outing the spring. "That light mist, about 50 degrees."
The right-hander gave up five runs, three earned, and six hits -- including Jermaine Dye's two-run homer -- in the Diamondbacks' 6-5 victory. Haren struck out four and didn't walk a batter.
"I thought he was pretty sharp," manager Bob Melvin said. "The numbers wouldn't suggest he was as good as I thought he was."
The game was delayed 22 minutes by rain that still was coming down when Haren threw his first pitch.
"Right now I'm just happy we got it in, because I didn't want to go out there and just get loose or throw one or two innings and not get it in," he said.
Conor Jackson went 3-for-4 for Arizona, including a double down the left field line off Andrew Sisco that brought in the go-ahead run in the seventh.
White Sox starter Gavin Floyd, the fourth overall pick in the 2001 draft, allowed five runs -- four earned -- and five hits in four innings, striking out three and walking three. He threw two wild pitches.
Floyd said it took time to get into his rhythm after the uncertain start.
"They were putting the tarp on, putting it off, putting it on," he said. "It didn't look like the mountains were showing out there, so it didn't look like we were going to get the game in."
Dye's homer, a line shot over the left fence, was his third of the spring.
"It's all about getting ready for the season," he said. "You come down, get your work in and gradually work into it and hope that you don't peak too early. You want to go into that last week and a half, two weeks, seeing the ball good."
Augie Ojeda singled in two runs in the second for the Diamondbacks, then scored when Jerry Owens dropped Chris Young's fly ball in center for a three-base error. Chicago scored two unearned runs in the fifth on errors by Ojeda at shortstop and right fielder Justin Upton.
"We played a little better the last few days," said Melvin, whose team had lost its last five. "We didn't swing the bats maybe as well but it just seems like our energy's picked up a little bit."
Notes:@ Melvin said Randy Johnson felt fine after throwing three scoreless innings on Saturday. Johnson will pitch Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. ... Haren gets an extra day's rest and will go again on Saturday. ... The White Sox wore bright green caps in anticipation of St. Patrick's Day.
